Museum Mission, Vision, & Ideals
The mission of the Museum of American Porcelain Art is to preserve, collect, and foster an appreciation for American porcelain art, including its historic lineage and contemporary form, through exhibits, educational programming and scholarly research.
The Museum of American Porcelain Art is the world’s most comprehensive collection of American porcelain art and as such a popular destination and vital part of the cultural and educational amenities that Greater Cleveland offers residents and visitors. MAPA will be known as the most complete repository and best place to view and do research on the artwork of a special strand of American porcelain artists who worked in the mid-20th century and whose distinct style came to an end with the lives of those very artists.
To collect, preserve and protect American porcelain art according to the standards of the American Alliance of Museums and promote it as unique genre of art
To grow the museum’s collection through purchases and gifts and provide a secure facility for collectors to donate with confidence
To make art accessible and enjoyable to the public through the museum’s collection, other collections on permanent or temporary loan to the museum, and related educational programming
To present the museum’s art and exhibitions in historical context using materials and other media that foster an understanding and appreciation of the art
To maintain the world’s most comprehensive collections of American porcelain art and reference material
To open the museum’s collection for research, documentation, and interpretation of American porcelain art
To engage schools, colleges, and the regional community through diverse programs and presentations
To promote the rich history and legacy of the museum’s facility and its grounds, and thus inspire communities everywhere to participate in the preservation of their local community assets for future generations to enjoy
To position the museum as a means of enhancing community development, job creation, and as a supporting organization for community groups
